The journey begins with fibre production. Whether natural (cotton, wool, linen) or synthetic (polyester, nylon), fibres form the foundation of any textile. Cotton requires farming, harvesting, ginning, and cleaning before it becomes usable. Synthetic fibres undergo chemical polymerisation processes before being extruded into filament threads. Only after fibres are prepared can they move to the next step—spinning.
Spinning mills convert fibres into yarns. Through carding, drawing, and twisting, loose fibres are transformed into strands suitable for weaving or knitting. Once produced, the fabric is often in a raw, untreated state. To become wearable, it must undergo finishing processes such as bleaching, dyeing, printing, or coating. Dyeing and printing are among the most resource-intensive phases, using water, heat, and chemicals. Innovations like digital printing and waterless dyeing aim to reduce this impact. After colouring, fabrics undergo finishing treatments for softness, strength, wrinkle resistance, or moisture management.
Once fabric rolls are ready, they move to garment factories, where cutting and sewing occur. Pattern masters create templates; markers optimise fabric usage to reduce waste. Layers of fabric are cut using manual tools or automated cutters. Skilled workers then sew dozens of individual components—collars, sleeves, plackets—into complete garments.
After assembly, the garment undergoes quality control. Inspectors check for stitching defects, colour mismatches, shrinkage, and measurements. Only pieces that meet brand standards proceed to finishing steps like ironing, labeling, and packaging.
The final stage involves logistics and distribution. Garments are shipped to warehouses, e-commerce hubs, or retailers across the world. Transport alone may account for thousands of kilometres of travel.
Throughout this supply chain, factors like MOQ (minimum order quantity), lead times, and factory capacity shape production timelines. Delays at any stage—raw material shortages, shipping congestion, or compliance audits—can affect final delivery.
